A Story about Crêpes (includes a video)

Crêpes, the delicate and delicious flat French pancake. I’ve made these several times, some for dessert and others for a meal. I’ve also made gluten-free crêpes, which were pretty good!

Now, what exactly is a crêpe?

As said above, it is basically a flat pancake, but at the same time, it’s not at all a pancake. When you think of a pancake, you think of ones that are on the thicker side, more like a cake. While crêpes are very thin, delicate, and more crispy. They also have a lot more milk and eggs and have a very thin batter.

Did you know there are special pans just for cooking crêpes?! I never understood why until I made them. I just used a small frying pan, and the sides on the pan made it really hard to flip it. Crêpe pans almost don’t have sides, but just enough so that the batter doesn’t spread off the edges.

Now, there isn’t much of an adventure when I made crêpes, the story really comes from why I made them.

Back in high school, there was a cooking competition. Since I loved to bake, of course, I entered! The competition was between the different language clubs, hosted by the German club. I was in the French club, so I had to make a French dish. At that point, I had made crêpes before, but I knew what to expect, and they were relatively easy.

The first ever crêpe I made looked like scrambled eggs; it was pretty bad. Unfortunately, I don’t have a picture of it to show you all.

So the other part of the competition was to make a video presentation of you making it. I have had experience making home videos with my brother, so I knew the basics of filming. I was rushed to finish filming and editing since my family and I was getting ready to go on a trip.

I remember the exact positions everything was in. There was the counter with the bowl and ingredients. Then there was the tripod standing in front of me and me behind it. It was very uncomfortable and hard actually to film without getting my arms in.

Overall, I remember it being fun and pretty easy. I didn’t think I had a chance of winning at all. But on the other hand, I thought, maybe I did have a good chance because I had experience with filming, and as it was mainly judged on from the video. I did all the filming in one night and edited it in a couple of days.

I prepped most of the ingredients, and all I could think was about those really cool cooking videos and how much prep they must have to do. I actually still think that because it’s an unnatural way for me to cook. My brain keeps going, why put one ingredient in a bowl when you can get it directly from the container?

It is so much easier for filming and better quality to prep all your ingredients, and I will do that when I make cooking videos (which may be coming soon 👀)

Once I finished with everything, I submitted it and now just had to wait.

I think about a month, or so later, I found out I won 1st place! I was shocked and thrilled. I never really won anything like that, so it was a new and really cool thing to experience.

Now that I have talked about the video and the story, you must be wanting to watch it.

I’m happy to tell you, you can watch it on here or go to Becky’s Kitchen Corner’s youtube channel! But remember, I made this a bit ago, and it is pretty bad, but hey, it was good enough to win first place. 😉

Do you think I should try and remake this?

~Becky 🙂

About Me

Welcome to Becky’s Kitchen Corner! I am so happy to see that you are here today. My name is Rebekah, but around here I’m known as Becky. I love to be in the kitchen, cooking and baking up a storm. Though, I don’t like cleaning up the storm as much, ha!

I’m from Pittsburgh and now living in a much sunnier state of North Carolina. I am the youngest of 8 kids and so growing up, I had lots of people to eat up my baked goodies.

In the daytime, I work as a nanny for my sister and brother-in-law to care for my adorable, silly nephew.
