Planting our 2022 Garden (PT2)

Planting our 2022 Garden (PT2)

We are in the middle of the 2022 garden season, and I think it’s going pretty well! Things are growing, and that’s the key. Now, is it any good? That’s the second challenge. Overall, I think we are doing well for planting our first-time garden!

Baby Sunflower

To remind you what we planted:

  • Tomatoes
  • Jalapenos
  • Bush beans
  • Garlic
  • Carrots
  • Squash
  • Potatoes
  • Herbs
  • Raspberries
  • Blackberries
  • Strawberries

Tomatoes:

Very first tomato!

The tomatoes are going crazing! There are so many tomatoes on the two plants. The problem is, they’re all splitting. I’ve read that it’s because there are fluctuations with watering. Somedays, it pours, and other days, it’s really dry. It could be that or possibly something else. Have you ever experienced something like this?

Jalapenos:

This is our “cheater” plant

Our Jalapeno plant decided to start growing finally! For the first couple of months, it stayed where it was. Flowering but never producing fruit. Since we thought it had died, my sister bought another one, much bigger with fruit already on it. Now we have so many peppers!

Bush Beans:

Out of the 19 seeds I planted, one has finally come up! I planted two rounds of them; the first was ten seeds in early summer. The one came up, and I planted nine more mid-summer and none other. But the one I do have is doing very well! I saw a little white and purple flower on it even! I can’t wait till we get a few beans now!

Garlic:

2022 Garden

My garlic is growing wild! We are going to have a ton of garlic once I harvest it! I don’t remember how many I planted, but I’d say we have at least 10-15 plants now. It’s been starting to spread over to the tomatoes too.

Carrots:

My one little carrot is growing well! It shares a row with the garlic, but now I see that was a mistake. It’s pretty crowded in that row now. I also planted some carrots in my cloth bags but haven’t seen much from them.

Squash:

This is a new plant my sister planted semi-recently. I planted some early spring, but they never came up. The seeds were probably old, the same thing with the beans. One is going well, the other not so much. But we’ll see how they do with time!

Potatoes:

This may be my favorite plant this year, but I’m not sure. They are doing so well! I think they are sweet potatoes, but I don’t remember. I should have marked them at the beginning but forgot. I have two full bags of potatoes and a third on the way!

Herbs:

We planted basil, rosemary, and cilantro. None of them are doing well. Basil and rosemary are still there; I can use what’s there, but they aren’t growing. Cilantro is long gone; pretty sure the NC heat killed it quickly

Berries:

The very first fruit from my raspberry!!

I have my raspberry, and my sister has her blackberry and strawberry. I had two raspberry plants, but one didn’t make it, so in the compost, it went. The one I have now is starting to produce berries! They aren’t perfect since this is the first crop, but hopefully, they’ll get better next year! If it makes it that far, though. The plant itself, I don’t think, is doing well. It has a partially black stem. I’ve read that it could be a lack of nutrients. So I’ve added some egg shells. The soil also needs to be a certain acidity which is very likely it isn’t what it’s supposed to be.

The blackberry and strawberry are doing well. The blackberry is a viney, and it’s starting to climb up our fence! The strawberry is now just a cute little plant.

Flowers:

I just transplanted these, so they look a bit sad. But hopefully, in a few days, they’ll all pop up!

My two favorite flowers (at least to grow) are marigolds and sunflowers! They’re both so pretty! In the early summer, I planted both kinds—the marigolds in pots and sunflowers in the ground.

But soon after the sunflowers started sprouting, we started having some fluffy visitors to the yard who loved sunflower seedlings—the Bunny. I replanted once or twice, and they survived a while, but the Bunny got them in the end. So, I decided to try and start them in pots. The sunflowers are supposed to be giant 10ft sunflowers, so I knew I would need to transplant them at some point.

So, I did that today (July 2022). I dug out a nice spot away from the Bunny entrance. I had four growing in pots. I transplanted 3 of them to the backyard and one by the mailbox. So far, so good!

Now Marigolds are so easy to grow and such hardy plants. I planted some by the mailbox, and the lawn mower guy cut them down twice, and they’re still growing back! I also planted some near my sunflowers in the back. I read that bunnies don’t like marigolds, so it’s a win-win!

Overall, everything is growing nicely! I will return with one last post about our 2022 garden once we harvest everything!

About Me

Welcome to Becky’s Kitchen Corner! I am so happy to see that you are here today. My name is Rebekah, but around here I’m known as Becky. I love to be in the kitchen, cooking and baking up a storm. Though, I don’t like cleaning up the storm as much, ha!

I’m from Pittsburgh and now living in a much sunnier state of North Carolina. I am the youngest of 8 kids and so growing up, I had lots of people to eat up my baked goodies.

In the daytime, I work as a nanny for my sister and brother-in-law to care for my adorable, silly nephew.
